Sindh Announces Implementation of Drug Testing for Students
Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon announced that starting May 10, the Excise & Taxation Department will take strict measures against unregistered vehicles. Additionally, random drug tests will be conducted on students in educational institutions.
During a media briefing, Memon underscored the global challenge of drug abuse, which significantly impacts the youth. He mentioned President Asif Zardari’s recent directive to address the drug problem in the province. Memon praised the efforts of various government departments, particularly Home Minister Ziaul Hassan, in the ongoing anti-drug operations. He disclosed plans to establish new rehabilitation centers and called on parents to remain vigilant. Highlighting recent achievements, Memon stated that 1,550 suspects had been apprehended, and substantial quantities of drugs had been seized. He assured that the identities of students testing positive for drugs would be kept confidential and promised strict action against drug suppliers.
Regarding vehicle registration, Memon declared that starting May 10, unregistered vehicles would be impounded. He urged vehicle owners to promptly collect their registration plates and warned of fines for late payment of vehicle taxes.
Addressing the issue of staff shortages in the narcotics control department, Memon explained that a pending hiring process had been delayed due to a legal stay order, causing frustration among job seekers.
