Saad Rafique Wants NAB Ordinance Withdrawn to Stop Extending Remand Period

He said, “This very harsh law shouldn’t be backed, so they should take it away.”

PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique criticized the extension of the remand period under the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance, calling it unacceptable. He said the law, originally made by a dictator, should be withdrawn as it has been misused for political reasons, causing harm to innocent people.

The NAB Ordinance has been changed, allowing suspects to be held for up to 40 days instead of 14. Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani signed two new ordinances, the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 and the Elections Act (Amendment) Ordinance 2024, on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif since President Asif Zardari is currently in Dubai.

The MQM-P also criticized the amendments, saying they won’t benefit anyone. They find it unreasonable to reduce the punishment for officials who wrongly prosecute individuals from five years to two.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly passed a resolution against the Elections Act (Amendment) Ordinance 2024, which allows retired judges to serve on election tribunals alongside serving judges. The resolution, moved by legislator Abdus Salam, accused the government of interfering with the judiciary and demanded the ordinance be withdrawn.
