Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, announced his retirement from T20 international cricket following his team’s triumphant second T20 World Cup victory under his leadership on Saturday. In the World Cup final in Barbados, India defeated South Africa.

During the press conference, Rohit Sharma disclosed his decision, echoing Virat Kohli’s retirement announcement during the post-match ceremony.

“This was my final T20I game. There couldn’t be a better moment to bid farewell to this format. I have cherished every moment. It all started for me in India playing this format. Winning this trophy was my ultimate goal.

“I desired this victory deeply. It’s hard to express in words. It was an emotional moment for me. Winning this title meant a lot in my career. I am glad we eventually achieved it.”

Rohit Sharma departs as the highest run-scorer in the format with 4231 runs in 159 matches and holds the record for the most centuries (five) in T20 internationals. He has claimed two T20 World Cup titles: as a player in 2007 and now as captain in 2024.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from T20Is did not come as a complete surprise. Both players did not participate in any T20Is after India’s semi-final exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup. They returned to T20I action only in January this year, with their focus set on the 2024 T20 World Cup.

As captain, Rohit Sharma led in 62 matches, scoring 1905 runs at a strike rate of 149.76 and an average of 34.01. Under his captaincy, India won 49 out of 62 matches.
