PARIS — Biles Leads USA to Olympic Gold as Irish Swimmer Makes History Simone Biles clinched her fifth Olympic gold medal as she spearheaded the United States to a dominant win in the women’s gymnastics team final on Tuesday (July 30). This victory also marked a historic moment for Irish swimming, as Daniel Wiffen set a new record.
On a sweltering day in Paris, with temperatures soaring to 35 degrees Celsius, the Bercy Arena was the focal point of excitement as Biles aimed to put her Tokyo 2021 experience behind her.
The 27-year-old American, widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time, added another gold to her collection, following her four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Games. In Tokyo, Biles struggled with a mental block known as the “twisties,” which affected her performance and led the USA to a silver medal.
But with Biles returning to peak form, she and her teammates—Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Sunisa Lee—led the competition from start to finish, successfully reclaiming the gold.
