An Islamabad court has cleared Imran Khan of charges related to the protest case against the Election Commission of Pakistan ECP
Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), along with several other leaders, has been cleared of charges by a court in Islamabad. The case was about their protest against a decision by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Today, Judicial Magistrate Yasir Mehmood announced the verdict after hearing petitions seeking their innocence. The leaders acquitted include Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sheikh Rasheed, Asad Qaiser, Shehryar Afridi, Faisal Javed, Raja Khurram Nawaz, and Ali Nawaz Awan.
PTI’s lawyers, Advocate Sardar Masroof and Advocate Ansar Kayani, presented their arguments in court on behalf of the former prime minister and others.
The case was filed after protests against the ECP’s decision in 2022 that temporarily disqualified Khan from holding office. Khan has faced various charges, including corruption and terrorism, since stepping down as prime minister in 2022.
Khan has been in jail since August last year and has been convicted in some cases before the recent national election. He is also dealing with many other legal cases.
Currently, the main legal obstacle keeping him in jail involves a case related to a marriage issue, with proceedings expected to conclude later this month.
