Starting September 1, 2024, petrol prices in Pakistan will drop by Rs 5-6 per litre. This will be the third time in a row that petrol prices have gone down.

Why Are Prices Going Down?

1. Global Oil Prices Falling:

  • Over the past two weeks, the price of oil around the world has decreased.
  • Oil prices have dropped from $82.50 to $80.40 per barrel.
  • The price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has also fallen, from $90.30 to $88 per barrel.
  • The extra cost of importing petrol has also gone down by 50 cents per barrel, which helps lower local prices.

2. Stronger Pakistani Rupee:

  • The Pakistani rupee has become stronger compared to the US dollar.
  • The rupee gained 25 cents against the dollar recently.
  • This stronger rupee has made it cheaper to buy petrol from abroad.

Current and Recent Prices:

  • As of August 14, 2024, the price of petrol is Rs 260.96 per litre.
  • High-speed diesel (HSD) is priced at Rs 266.07 per litre.

Price Changes in Recent Months:

  • On August 14, 2024, the government reduced petrol prices by Rs 8.47 per litre and HSD by Rs 6.70 per litre.
  • Earlier, there was a total price cut of Rs 14.64 per litre for petrol and Rs 17.56 per litre for HSD over the past two fortnights.
  • In July 2024, petrol prices were reduced by Rs 6.17 per litre and HSD by Rs 10.86 per litre.

Earlier Reductions:

  • Between May 1 and June 15, 2024, petrol prices went down by about Rs 35 per litre, and HSD prices were cut by Rs 22 per litre.

What to Expect in September:

This is good news for both households and businesses in Pakistan, as it will help save money on fuel and provide some financial relief.

With global oil prices still dropping and the rupee remaining strong, petrol prices are expected to decrease further in September 2024.

The government has decided to close utility stores all over the country.
