YouTube Tools for Detecting AI-Generated Faces and Voices
YouTube is working on new tools to help identify when faces and voices in videos are created by artificial intelligence (AI). Amjad Hanif, YouTube’s Vice President of Creator Products, shared this information in a blog post this week. He emphasized that YouTube is committed to developing AI tools responsibly.
One of the new tools will focus on detecting “synthetic singing.” This means it will help recognize when singing in a video is generated by AI, rather than a real person. This tool will be added to YouTube’s Content ID system, which helps identify and manage copyrighted music.
Content ID has been around since 2007, and Mashable reported in 2016 that YouTube has paid billions of dollars to music rights holders through this system. Hanif confirmed that this continues to be the case, underscoring the importance of Content ID in protecting copyright.
The new technology will be able to identify when a musician’s voice is created by AI. There will be a test of this technology starting next year.
