The United Nations has endorsed a resolution spearheaded by China on artificial intelligence (AI).

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution led by China aimed at assisting less developed nations in harnessing the benefits of AI. Co-sponsored by the US and several other countries, this non-binding proposal seeks to bolster AI capabilities in developing countries through international cooperation and capacity-building initiatives. It also calls upon international organizations and financial institutions to lend their support to these endeavors.

The resolution highlights the ongoing technological competition between Beijing and Washington, with both countries vying for influence in AI governance and portraying each other as sources of instability. Earlier this year, the US advanced a UN resolution advocating for AI systems that are ‘safe, secure, and trustworthy’, garnering support from over 110 countries, including China.

China’s resolution recognizes the UN’s role in promoting AI capacity-building and tasks Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with reporting on the specific challenges faced by developing countries, along with recommendations to address them.
