South Africa won by 6 wickets , with 22 balls remaining

South Africa vs Sri lanka: The first T20 World Cup game at the new stadium in Eisenhower Park just finished. South Africa won against Sri Lanka by six wickets in a match where not many runs were scored. The game showed us more about the field and weather than the teams playing. The ground is not easy for batting because the ball bounces oddly and there’s not a lot of spin. Also, the boundaries around the field are far away, making it hard for players to hit the ball out.

Sri Lanka chose to bat first but struggled right from the start. In the first six overs, called the Powerplay, they only scored 24 runs. By the tenth over, they had only 40 runs on the scoreboard and had lost 5 wickets, which is their lowest score at that point in a match. South Africa’s bowlers, who mainly use a technique called seam bowling, quickly adjusted to the field conditions. They bowled the ball closer to the batsman, changed their speeds effectively, and were very disciplined.

Anrich Nortje, who had been out of the game for almost nine months due to an injury, performed exceptionally well. He took 4 wickets while only giving away 7 runs, which is the best performance of his career so far. Nortje’s bowling speed reached 150 kilometers per hour, and he also used slower deliveries cleverly. Another player, Ottneil Baartman, who was playing in the T20 World Cup for the first time, bowled 20 balls where the batsmen couldn’t score any runs. This is the same number as a record set by another bowler named Ajantha Mendis back in 2012.

Because of South Africa’s good teamwork, only three Sri Lankan batters scored more than ten runs. Also, only one pair of batters managed to build a good partnership, which means they worked well together to score runs. This partnership was between Dasun Shanaka and Angelo Mathews, and it was the only one where they scored more than 20 runs together.

Sri Lanka might regret not scoring more runs because if they had gotten another 20 or 30 runs, it would have been harder for South Africa to win. When Sri Lanka had scored 58 runs in the 13th over, reaching a total of 100 runs would have been very challenging for them. But if they had managed to score 78 runs by then, it would have been more possible. However, South Africa’s players Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller played well and helped their team win the match with 22 balls left to spare.
