On Thursday, the Sindh Assembly passed the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25) amid vehement opposition and commotion during the session.
The budget, amounting to a staggering Rs3.056 trillion, includes recommendations for developmental expenditures totaling Rs959 billion.
Despite strong objections from the opposition, the finance bill, crucial for outlining the financial framework of the upcoming year, was moved and approved with a majority vote. Opposition members, dissatisfied with the ruling alliance’s rejection of all their proposals, protested by tearing copies of the Finance Bill and walking out of the assembly hall.
Chaired by Speaker Syed Owais Qadir Shah, the assembly session witnessed numerous cut motions from opposition members against various budgetary demands, all of which were dismissed by the treasury benches.
According to budgetary projections, Sindh expects revenues of Rs3 trillion, with 62% anticipated from federal transfers and 22% from provincial receipts. The provincial assembly has also allocated Rs142.5 billion for public sector investments.
Opposition lawmakers criticized the government for rushing the finance bill through the house, focusing solely on tax issues of two departments. Ali Khurshidi, the opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly, expressed disappointment, stating that the opposition’s proposals were disregarded.
Khurshidi highlighted concerns over increased professional taxes affecting hospital fees, school costs, and medical expenses.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah concluded the debate on the provincial budget, outlining government priorities, upcoming projects, and the socio-economic landscape of Sindh.
A total of 131 members from the 168-member House participated in the discussion on the provincial budget, held amidst a contentious atmosphere.
