A tragic incident unfolded in Plateau state, Nigeria, where a two-storey school building belonging to Saint Academy in the Busa Buji community collapsed on July 12, 2024. According to Sky News, the collapse resulted in the loss of twenty-two lives. Reportedly, 154 individuals were initially trapped under the debris, but all except the deceased were successfully rescued and are receiving treatment for injuries across various hospitals, as stated by a police spokesperson.
Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed in a Facebook post that thirty people remain hospitalized following the rescue operation, which has now concluded and cleared the site. The collapse occurred during school hours, highlighting ongoing concerns about building safety in the country, where incidents like these are unfortunately common due to inadequate safety regulations and the use of substandard construction materials.
