PTI founder’s request for WhatsApp call with sons denied
A court in Rawalpindi has turned down Imran Khan’s request to have a weekly WhatsApp call with his sons.
Imran Khan asked the court to let him talk to his sons on WhatsApp once a week. The jail said prisoners can’t use WhatsApp to contact family. Before, the court said Khan could talk to his kids twice a month. His sons live in the UK with their mother, Jemima Khan.
Earlier, the PTI founder filed a request with the Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) because he was refused permission to talk to his sons over the phone from Adiala Jail.
In his application, Khan argued that he has the legal right to speak with his sons, which he has been denied.
Judge Malik Aijaz Asif, who presides over the ATC, asked the jail administration to respond to Khan’s request.
Imran Khan, who was the prime minister before being removed from office, has been in jail since last August. He was found guilty in some cases just before a national election in February.
Recently, courts have paused Imran Khan’s prison terms in two cases related to illegally getting and selling state presents. They also canceled his guilty verdict for leaking state secrets.
Yet, he’s still in jail because of a conviction in another case. A trial court said his 2018 marriage was illegal. Khan also has a trial ahead on anti-terrorism charges from violence in May last year.
