PM Shehbaz Announces Free E-Bikes Scheme for Students

In a recent meeting in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif introduced a new initiative focused on promoting electric vehicles (EVs) throughout Pakistan. The goal is to finalize a national E-Vehicles policy by November, following discussions with various regional leaders and stakeholders.

During the meeting, PM Sharif stressed the importance of creating a solid financial plan and updating licensing rules for EV production. He mentioned that advancing electric vehicle technology would reduce the country’s dependence on imported petrol and diesel and help protect the environment.

A key announcement was the launch of a new scheme to provide free electric motorbikes to outstanding students from government schools. This initiative is similar to the previous laptop distribution program, aiming to reward academic excellence and encourage the use of eco-friendly technology.

Additionally, PM Sharif instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to create a detailed plan for incorporating electric-powered public transport in Islamabad. This effort is part of a larger strategy to improve the city’s transportation system and lower its carbon emissions.

The meeting also highlighted the progress in Pakistan’s electric vehicle sector since 2022. The country has issued forty-nine licenses for the production of electric two and three-wheelers, with twenty-five factories now in operation. In September, the first license for the production of electric cars was granted, and the first locally produced electric car is expected to be available by December.

To support the growing number of electric vehicles, the government is prioritizing the establishment of recharging stations. These facilities are crucial for the widespread use of electric vehicles and will be set up as soon as possible.
