Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro Emerges as Leading Candidate for Vice President

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro Emerges as Leading Candidate for Vice President As speculation grew last week about the possibility of Joe Biden withdrawing from the presidential race, Governor Josh Shapiro’s name emerged repeatedly as a likely running mate for Kamala Harris.

Following Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he would not seek reelection, Harris received Biden’s endorsement as the Democratic nominee, shifting attention to Shapiro and other potential vice presidential candidates.

Delegates at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month will ultimately decide the party’s nominee.

According to The Washington Post, Shapiro is being vetted along with several other potential vice presidential picks funded by major Democratic donors. The list includes Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.

Shapiro’s notable advantage lies in his potential to help secure crucial electoral votes from Pennsylvania. At 51 years old, Shapiro, a graduate of Georgetown Law, was elected governor in 2022 with a decisive victory over state Senator Doug Mastriano, a prominent supporter of Donald Trump. Previously, he served as the state attorney general and a state representative from Montgomery County, north of Philadelphia.

Shapiro gained national attention for his leadership during the June 2023 I-95 overpass collapse, which reopened approximately two weeks later. He also drew praise for his handling of the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Trump in Butler County on July 13.

Chris Borick, director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, noted Shapiro’s strong standing in Pennsylvania, a pivotal swing state, as a significant advantage for the Democratic ticket. Borick highlighted Shapiro’s high approval ratings and recognition as a rising star within the Democratic Party.

While Shapiro’s tenure as governor is relatively short, Borick suggested this may not pose as significant a challenge as similar circumstances for Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, who has served less than two years as a U.S. senator.

As attorney general, Shapiro oversaw a high-profile investigation into sexual abuse by members of the Roman Catholic Church, underscoring his experience in tackling complex issues.

Shapiro’s candidacy, however, faces scrutiny regarding his political experience and public profile compared to figures like Vance, whose bestselling book “Hillbilly Elegy” and subsequent media attention bolstered his visibility.

If Shapiro were to join Harris on the Democratic ticket and win, he would become the highest-ranking Jewish politician in American history. This historic milestone could resonate positively among Jewish voters, potentially broadening support for the Democratic ticket.

In response to Biden’s decision, Shapiro expressed admiration for the president’s leadership and promptly endorsed Harris. Emphasizing the importance of unity within the Democratic Party, Shapiro pledged his support to help Harris secure the presidency, highlighting Pennsylvania’s critical role in the election.

Shapiro did not address his future plans beyond his endorsement of Harris, focusing instead on rallying support for the Democratic ticket and emphasizing the contrast between their vision and that of the opposition.
