Pakistan on High Alert: NDMA Issues Flash Flood Warning as Heavy Rains Approach
Pakistan on High Alert: NDMA Issues Flash Flood Warning as Heavy Rains Approach Public urged to avoid floodwaters and seek safe shelter during monsoon.
NDMA Issues Flash Flood Warning: Heavy Rains Expected from July 28 to 31
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory ahead of anticipated monsoon rains, accompanied by wind and thundershowers, from July 28 to July 31.
Monsoon currents originating from the Arabian Sea are expected to impact the upper regions of Pakistan during this period. The NDMA has directed all relevant departments to implement precautionary measures to mitigate potential flooding and adverse weather effects.
The upcoming weather system may lead to increased rainfall, which could trigger landslides, mudslides, or falling boulders, particularly affecting roadways in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K).
Moreover, flash flooding is possible in local nullahs, with hill torrents likely to develop in the Sulaiman and Kirthar Ranges, as well as in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur.
The public is advised to avoid areas prone to flooding and seek shelter in safe locations. Even a small amount of moving water, such as six inches, can be dangerous enough to knock a person off their feet, and a foot of water can sweep away vehicles. Additionally, bridges may become hazardous during floods, and crossing them should be avoided if water levels are high.
To provide timely updates and safety information, the NDMA has launched the ‘Pak NDMA Disaster Alert’ app, available for download on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store.
