Pakistan has authorized an increase of Rs5.72 per unit in power tariffs
The federal cabinet has given its approval to raise the basic power tariff by Rs5.72 per unit through circulation.
Sources mentioned that the decision will be forwarded to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to ensure the uniform implementation of the tariff. The Power Division plans to submit an application to NEPRA regarding the tariff increase. NEPRA decided on this adjustment for the fiscal year 2024-2025, which will start on July 1, 2024. The average basic electricity tariff is set to rise from Rs 29.78 to Rs 35.50 per unit.
According to a report from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the power sector in Pakistan caused a loss of Rs403 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23. NEPRA released a progress report on power distribution companies, including K-Electric, which revealed that nine distribution companies, including K-Electric, did not achieve full recovery of their dues.
The report stated that these companies’ inefficiencies, such as line losses and low recovery rates, contributed significantly to the national loss of Rs403 billion. It also noted that these companies did not purchase electricity according to their allocated quotas. Additionally, the report highlighted that load shedding occurred intentionally because these companies were not fulfilling their electricity purchase quotas.
