New Google TV Streamer 4K Launches with Enhanced Chipset, Increased Memory, and Gigabit Ethernet
Google TV Streamer (4K) Unveiled with Enhanced Performance and Features
New Google TV Streamer 4K Launches with Enhanced Chipset, Increased Memory, and Gigabit Ethernet Google has unveiled the Google TV Streamer (4K), marking a departure from its previous branding, “Google Chromecast with Google TV.” This new device boasts several hardware upgrades, including a faster chipset, increased memory, and enhanced connectivity options.
The Google TV Streamer features a 22% faster processor compared to its predecessor, although this is somewhat modest given that the Chromecast 4K model dates back to 2020. More significant improvements include a doubling of the RAM to 4GB and a fourfold increase in on-board storage, now at 32GB. Additionally, the device integrates a gigabit Ethernet port, eliminating the need for an external adapter and offering a substantial upgrade from the previous 100Mbps capability. It also includes a USB-C port for both power and optional data transfer. Despite the increase in size, there is still only one USB-C port and no microSD card slot.
The HDMI 2.1 port supports 4K HDR at 60fps with compatibility for HDR10(+), Dolby Vision, and HLG. For audio, the device supports Dolby’s various standards, including Atmos. Although AV1 codec support is expected, it is not specified on the official specs page.
The redesigned remote control now includes a “find my remote” feature, which allows users to make the remote beep by pressing a button on the back of the device or issuing a voice command via a Pixel phone or Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker. The remote also features improved ergonomics with a grippy texture on the back.
Wireless connectivity remains largely unchanged with Wi-Fi 5 (ac) supporting 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and Bluetooth 5.1. A notable new addition is Matter, which turns the Streamer into a Google Home hub and serves as a Thread border router.
The remote now includes a customizable button that can be programmed to launch specific apps or switch inputs. Smart home functionality allows users to check Nest Doorbell cameras and control the Nest Learning Thermostat. The device also incorporates Google’s Gemini AI for content recommendations across all your streaming subscriptions, and can generate summaries and reviews of movies and shows.
The Google TV Streamer (4K) is available for pre-order starting today at a price of $100. It comes in Porcelain and Hazel color options, with the latter being exclusive to Google. The device is set to ship on September 24.
