The Netherlands staged a remarkable comeback against Turkey in Euro 2024, scoring two goals in the second half within seven minutes to secure a 2-1 victory on Saturday. This win sets up a semi-final clash with England.

Turkey took the lead in the first half through Samet Akaydin’s header, but the Dutch responded strongly after the break. Stefan de Vrij equalized with a header, and Cody Gakpo’s pressure led to an own goal by Murt Muldur in the 76th minute, sealing the win for the Netherlands.

The quarter-final match in Berlin was notable for the diplomatic tensions between Turkey and Germany following Merih Demiral’s suspension for a controversial gesture. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the match at the Olympiastadion, where Dutch possession was met with loud whistles from the Turkish supporters.

Despite Turkey’s energetic play and late opportunities, the Netherlands held firm to reach their first Euros semi-final since 2004. Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk praised his team’s resilience, stating, “Tonight we had to dig very deep and I am proud of these guys.”

The Dutch, led by coach Vincenzo Montella, faced a defensive Turkish setup but managed to create chances through players like Gakpo and Memphis Depay. After an early flourish, the Dutch struggled in the first half but regrouped to dominate after the break, securing their place in the semi-finals.

Reflecting on their journey, the Netherlands, under the guidance of coach Ronald Koeman, have shown sporadic form but demonstrated their potential with a convincing win over Romania in the round of 16.
