National Raspberry Day Celebrated on July 8
July 8 marks National Raspberry Day on the National Day Calendar, dedicated to celebrating the beloved summertime fruit known as the raspberry. This delightful food holiday adds a sweet touch to our menus and delights our taste buds.
Raspberries, known for their vibrant red color, are native to North America and Asia Minor. Historically, they were gathered as early as the time of Christ in Troy and were documented as being domesticated in the 4th century by Roman agriculturist Palladius. Native Americans also cultivated raspberries, drying them for preservation during winter months.
Today, red raspberries are a prominent crop in states like California, Oregon, and Washington, collectively producing nearly 70 million pounds annually. The raspberry family includes red, yellow (gold), and black varieties, each offering distinct flavors and nutritional benefits.
Health-wise, raspberries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins C and E, beta carotene, lutein, and fiber. They contribute to brain function, cardiovascular health, diabetes management, digestive health, and eye protection.
National Raspberry Day encourages picking ripe raspberries, ideally in the morning or on cloudy days to preserve their delicate nature. Whether enjoyed fresh, in desserts like raspberries and cream, or as ingredients in jellies, preserves, pies, or ice cream, raspberries offer versatile culinary options.
Celebrate National Raspberry Day by trying a new raspberry recipe, visiting a raspberry farm for picking, learning about raspberry varieties, sharing recipes and photos on social media using #NationalRaspberryDay, and submitting your raspberry recipes to the National Day Calendar Recipe page.
Established by Amy Monette from National Day Calendar in 2023, National Raspberry Day invites raspberry enthusiasts worldwide to join in celebrating this delicious summer fruit on July 8 each year.
