- US presidential candidates are same as other users, Meta says.
Meta, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, has lifted restrictions on the social media accounts of former United States presidential candidate Donald Trump, as announced on Friday. This decision follows measures implemented after Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol in 2021, reported AFP.
The announcement specifies that “former President Trump, as the Republican Party nominee, will no longer face heightened suspension penalties.”
After the attack on the US Capitol by Trump’s supporters on January 6, 2021, his Facebook and Instagram accounts were indefinitely suspended due to his apparent endorsement of violent behavior on social media.
While his accounts were reinstated in February 2023, they were subject to potential penalties for future policy violations — an additional restriction that Meta has now lifted.
Meta stated in a blog post that in evaluating their responsibility to facilitate political expression, they believe that American citizens should hear from presidential nominees under the same conditions. The company emphasized that US presidential candidates are still bound by the same Community Standards as all users of Facebook and Instagram, including policies aimed at preventing hate speech and inciting violence.
Previously, Trump had also been banned from Twitter and YouTube, marking him as the first former US president to face criminal conviction.
