Manuel Neuer Retires from International Football: Reflecting on His Legacy and the Badge Controversy
Manuel Neuer Retires from Germany Team: A Look Back at the Controversy Over His Team Badge Manuel Neuer, Germany’s legendary goalkeeper, announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday, joining fellow retirees Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, and Ilkay Gündogan in ending his international career. Neuer, who made his debut in 2009, earned 124 caps for Germany, featuring in four World Cups and winning the tournament in 2014. He also represented Germany in four UEFA European Championships.
In a heartfelt tribute, the German football X account honored Neuer: “For one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, all words seem too small. But they come from the heart: Thank you, Manu! For your exceptional achievements and for your camaraderie, dedication, and inspiration to teammates and fans worldwide. You transformed goalkeeping and shaped this team. We will miss you dearly!”
Despite his acclaim, Neuer’s career wasn’t without controversy. When he joined Bayern Munich in 2011, as a self-proclaimed Schalke 04 fan, he faced resistance from some Bayern Munich Ultras. According to SportBild, a code of conduct issued by five supporter groups included several restrictions for Neuer. These rules prohibited him from leading chants with supporters, kissing the Bayern badge on his shirt, approaching the south stand’s fencing (home to the Ultras), throwing his shirt into the crowd, or kneeling and singing the club song in front of the team.
Neuer’s retirement marks the end of an era for both Germany and Bayern Munich, and his impact on football will be remembered for years to come.
