Ireland’s Simon Harris assures EU leaders will provide Keir Starmer with a ‘fair hearing’ regarding post-Brexit deal changes
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris has affirmed his readiness to collaborate closely with Sir Keir Starmer, stressing Ireland’s supportive stance towards enhancing UK-EU relations. Harris emphasized that EU leaders are prepared to give Sir Keir Starmer a fair hearing regarding potential revisions to the post-Brexit agreement, particularly advocating for measures such as a veterinary agreement aimed at reducing border checks on animal products.
In an interview for Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, Harris expressed optimism about the prospects for such proposals, viewing them as pivotal to fulfilling Starmer’s campaign promises. He highlighted Ireland’s commitment to facilitating constructive relations between Britain and the European Union, asserting that Ireland will always stand as an ally in promoting closer ties between the UK and the EU.
Regarding the broader Anglo-Irish relationship, Harris called for a “great reset” to overcome the strains of the post-Brexit era, underlining the importance of maintaining positive neighborly relations. He expressed eagerness to collaborate with the new UK Prime Minister, whom he described as a man of integrity following his comprehensive election victory.
Harris acknowledged the challenges of recent years but stressed the opportunity for both nations to build upon shared interests and mutual concerns. He welcomed the upcoming meeting with Sir Keir Starmer at a working dinner in Downing Street on July 17th, reflecting on a recent cordial phone call between them. Harris also praised the UK Prime Minister’s plan to abolish the contentious Legacy Act, which has faced opposition across Ireland.
Additionally, newly-appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn, has initiated discussions with political leaders in Northern Ireland, emphasizing the need to forge a renewed relationship between London and Stormont. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s upcoming visit to Northern Ireland is expected to further solidify these efforts to engage with local leaders and strengthen ties within the region.
