iOS 18 Introduces Life-Saving Emergency SOS Live Video Calls for iPhone Apple is enhancing its Emergency SOS feature in iOS 18 to include live video streaming during emergency calls. This update integrates with 911 support platforms like RapidSOS Unite and Prepared, initially in the US and expanding to other countries later.
When iOS 18 rolls out later this year, users will have the ability to share a live video feed with 911 dispatchers. This feature aims to provide crucial context to first responders, helping them locate and assist individuals in emergencies more effectively.
Announced at Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June, the update allows users not only to stream live video but also to share media stored in their camera roll. The goal is to offer responders additional situational awareness, potentially improving emergency response outcomes.
RapidSOS Unite has announced that emergency communication centers across the US will integrate Emergency SOS Live Video directly into its platform at no additional cost, covering 99% of the population. Apple had previously indicated plans to extend this feature to regions such as the UK, suggesting potential global availability as iOS 18 approaches its official release.
A suite of emergency features
In recent years, Apple has been steadily enhancing safety features across its devices. This includes Emergency SOS via Satellite, which ensures connectivity in remote areas lacking traditional cell coverage. Additionally, features like Crash Detection automatically alert emergency services in potential collision scenarios, while Fall Detection performs a similar function for Apple Watch users who experience falls.
iOS 18 introduces new emergency assistance capabilities to Apple devices. Alongside traditional calls, iMessage will soon support satellite communications, and users can request roadside assistance using satellite technology within the latest iPhone operating system update.
Apple has made Emergency SOS via Satellite free for the first two years, and it appears that there will be no charge for the new emergency features in iOS 18. This ensures users can access vital assistance without concerns about subscription renewals during emergencies.
Upon the full release of iOS 18 from beta, these new safety enhancements will further solidify Apple devices as indispensable tools for handling emergencies. Combined with a host of other features including Apple Intelligence and customizable Home screens, iOS 18 represents one of the most significant updates to Apple’s iPhone operating system in recent memory.
