ICC Board Meeting and Potential Election Scheduled for Dhaka
ICC Board Meeting and Possible Election Scheduled to Take Place in Dhaka Dhaka, Bangladesh, has been confirmed as the venue for the upcoming ICC board meeting, as announced by BCB President Nazmul Hassan. This meeting may also coincide with the ICC elections, according to Hassan’s recent press briefing.
Hassan indicated that the ICC board meeting and the possible election of a new ICC chairperson will take place in Dhaka. The current chairperson’s term is nearing its end, prompting the need for an election. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is expected to finalize the official procedures and authority for the election soon.
“There is a likelihood of the ICC election being held here, as the term of the current chairman is nearing its end. We anticipate finalizing the election mandate around this time,” Hassan stated.
Greg Barclay, the current ICC Chairman, was re-elected for a second two-year term in November 2022. His term is set to conclude later this year. Barclay, who won 11 out of 16 votes in the second ballot against Imran Khwaja during his initial election in November 2020, had stepped down from his role as Chairman of New Zealand Cricket to assume the ICC chairmanship.
Concerns had been raised regarding the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for October, due to political unrest in Bangladesh. However, BCB Chief Executive Officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury has assured that the tournament will proceed as planned.
Hassan addressed these concerns at a recent ICC meeting in Colombo, where he clarified that the situation in Bangladesh was stable despite negative external perceptions. His presence helped reassure international delegates, dispelling fears about the event’s viability.
“During my visit, I found that the situation was being miscommunicated internationally. My presence helped alleviate concerns and reassured everyone that conditions in Bangladesh are stable. The main focus for us now is hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup as scheduled,” Hassan concluded.
