After Kamala Harris won the Democratic presidential nomination in a surprising turn of events, she received advice from former President Barack Obama: to recruit top campaign talent. This led to former members of Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns, including David Plouffe and Stephanie Cutter, joining her campaign.

Obama, who had been cautious about endorsing Harris early on, decided to support her once it was clear she would not face significant challengers. His former advisers quickly came on board, adding his influence to Harris’ campaign and reinforcing his role in the Democratic Party.

Obama and Harris have known each other for 20 years, meeting at a fundraiser in California in 2004. Both have made history in their careers—Obama as the first Black U.S. president and Harris as the first female, Black, and South Asian vice president. Harris was an early supporter of Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, helping him with his launch and canvassing for him before the Iowa caucus.

Obama endorsed Biden’s choice of Harris as vice president and has remained in touch with her since the 2020 election. The Obamas have socialized with Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, and Obama has offered her advice and support for her campaign.

The enthusiasm surrounding Harris at her rallies is reminiscent of the excitement that surrounded Obama’s 2008 campaign, though their political styles are different. Harris’ campaign, with Tim Walz as her running mate, focuses on spreading joy, while Obama’s 2008 campaign was known for its themes of hope and change.

Michelle Obama, popular in the party, is also speaking at the convention, which many Democrats find encouraging. Meanwhile, former President Obama remains a beloved and influential figure in the party.

Obama’s influence has grown even as his relationship with President Biden has faced challenges. Some believe Obama, along with Nancy Pelosi, played a role in pushing Biden to step aside after a poor debate performance against Trump. Although Obama is seen as a supportive figure, his influence has led to some tension.

Biden, who will not be present for Obama’s prime-time convention speech, is spending the rest of the week on vacation in California after making his own remarks in Chicago. Despite the complexities in their relationship, Biden remains committed to working with Obama to defeat Trump in the upcoming election.
