Government and Jamaat-e-Islami to Discuss Power and Tax Increases
Government and Jamaat-e-Islami to Negotiate on Power Bills and Tax Hikes
Government and Jamaat-e-Islami to Discuss Power and Tax Increases The federal government is set to engage in talks with Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) today (Sunday) to resolve the party’s ongoing sit-in at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi.
On Saturday, JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman threatened to extend the sit-in to other regions if the government did not address the party’s concerns over soaring electricity bills and increasing taxes.
As the protest entered its second day, Murree Road was closed to traffic from Marrir Chowk to Committee Chowk, with containers blocking the route. This disruption affected local business activities.
Under pressure from JI, a government delegation led by Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar met with JI protesters on Saturday night. Both parties have agreed to a formal negotiation today to discuss JI’s demands.
State-owned PTV News confirmed the negotiations will take place this afternoon and noted that the exact location of the talks will be decided today. The meeting held last night between the government and JI was described as occurring in a “pleasant environment,” with hopes for productive discussions.
