KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, nearing his 100th birthday, has been hospitalized due to persistent coughing, according to his aide who spoke to AFP on Thursday.
Sufi Yusoff stated that Mahathir, who turned 99 last week, was admitted on Monday and is expected to undergo treatment for the next few days. Mahathir, a two-time former prime minister, has faced multiple heart issues in recent years and has undergone bypass surgeries.
Earlier this year, he spent nearly three months in the hospital. Born on July 10, 1925, Mahathir served as Malaysia’s fourth national leader from 1981 to 2003 and returned to office as prime minister for a second term at the age of 92 from 2018 to 2020.
