Chery has launched a new crossover SUV called Omoda 5
China’s Chery Auto is beginning to sell its Omoda 5 crossover SUV in Italy. The petrol version starts at 27,900 euros ($30,182). Chery is also considering expanding its production and sales in Europe. Earlier this year, the automaker started selling cars in Spain, focusing mostly on electric vehicles.
Chery Auto is expanding its presence globally, aiming to enter more than 60 new markets over the next three years. Vice President Shawn Xu announced this plan during a presentation in Milan. However, the European Union’s recent decision to impose tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles will affect Chery’s EVs, adding an additional duty of 20.8%.
In Italy, Chery will introduce an electric version of the Omoda 5 from September. Later this year, they will also offer the larger Jaecoo 7 SUV in Italy, first as a petrol model and then as a plug-in hybrid.
By the end of 2025, Chery plans to introduce three SUV models each for its Omoda and Jaecoo brands in Europe, featuring various fuel types to cater to different markets.
To mitigate the impact of tariffs and strengthen sales in Europe, Chery is considering bringing manufacturing capacity to the region. Earlier this year, Chery partnered with a local company in Spain to produce cars in Barcelona and is now exploring a second production site.
The Italian government has been actively seeking investments in manufacturing and has engaged in discussions with several Chinese automakers, including Chery. Industry Minister Adolfo Urso recently met with Chery Auto’s Chairman Yin Tongyue in Beijing to discuss potential collaborations.
Regarding talks with Rome, Shawn Xu mentioned that discussions are ongoing and further negotiations are needed before reaching a deal.
