AMD has introduced new computer chips designed for artificial intelligence (AI) tasks, aiming to compete with Nvidia in this field.
On Monday, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) revealed its newest artificial intelligence processors. They also outlined their strategy to create more AI chips over the next two years to compete with Nvidia, a top player in the industry.
At the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, AMD CEO Lisa Su introduced the MI325X accelerator, which is set to be made available in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The demand for advanced chips used in AI data centers has skyrocketed due to the race to develop generative artificial intelligence programs.
AMD, a company competing against Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI semiconductor market, is now aiming to challenge its dominance. Nvidia holds around 80% of the market share.
Both companies are now planning to speed up their chip release cycles, with Nvidia aiming for annual releases. AMD is following suit, focusing heavily on AI development.
AMD unveiled its upcoming series of AI chips called MI350, set to be available in 2025. These chips are expected to perform 35 times better in inference, a key process in generative AI responses, compared to the current MI300 series.
Additionally, AMD introduced the MI400 series, scheduled for release in 2026, based on a new architecture called “Next.”
Meanwhile, Nvidia announced its next-generation AI chip platform, Rubin, also set for release in 2026. This platform will include GPUs, CPUs, and networking chips.
Investors, eager for updates on the booming AI chip market, are closely monitoring both companies’ developments. AMD expects AI chip sales to reach roughly $4 billion in 2024.
At the Computex event, AMD also discussed its latest central processor units (CPUs), expected to be available in the second half of 2024. These CPUs are often used alongside graphics processor units (GPUs) in AI applications.
Furthermore, AMD detailed its new neural processing units (NPUs), designed for handling on-device AI tasks in AI PCs.
Both AMD and Nvidia are banking on AI capabilities to drive growth in the PC market, which has been recovering from a prolonged slump.
