Telegram CEO Removes Features After Arrest
Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov has announced that he is making some changes to the app, including removing features he thinks are outdated. This decision comes after his recent arrest in France.
The first changes involve turning off Telegram’s built-in blog posts and the “People Nearby” location feature. Durov is taking these steps to improve Telegram’s reputation, which has been tarnished by its past issues with moderation. The app has been known for not effectively controlling illegal activities.
In August, French authorities arrested Durov. They accused him of helping with illegal transactions and spreading material related to child sexual abuse. By making these changes, Durov aims to address these concerns and improve the app’s image.
Here is the first statement Pavel Durov shared after his arrest last Thursday:
The CEO has announced that certain features will be turned off, including “People Nearby” and new media uploads to Telegram’s in-app blogging tool, Telegraph. These features were used by less than 0.1% of Telegram’s users, and many of those users were involved in harmful activities.
The “People Nearby” feature will be replaced by “Businesses Nearby.” This new feature will show legitimate and verified businesses instead of people. Businesses will be able to showcase their products and accept payments easily through this new tool.
Telegraph is a platform that was launched in 2016. It lets users create and share posts online without revealing their identities. However, security experts have discovered that criminals are misusing Telegraph. They use it to create fake websites or messages that deceive people into giving away their personal information.
