The Israeli military has announced that its warplanes are targeting Hezbollah sites in Lebanon. This action comes after Israel detected plans by Hezbollah to launch missiles and rockets into Israel.
According to IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari, these strikes are a defensive measure to neutralize the threats posed by Hezbollah. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are targeting what they call “terror targets” to protect themselves.
Israel has warned Lebanese civilians to leave areas where Hezbollah is active to avoid harm.
In response, Hezbollah has reported that it launched a large-scale drone attack on Israel. This attack is in retaliation for the recent killing of one of its senior military commanders.
Early on Sunday, sirens sounded across northern Israel warning of incoming rockets. There have been no immediate reports of injuries from this incident.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Hezbollah had launched over 150 projectiles from Lebanon towards Israeli territory. In response, the IDF said that dozens of Israeli Air Force jets were targeting various locations in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah, on the other hand, claimed that it had fired more than 320 Katyusha rockets at Israel. They said their rockets hit 11 Israeli military bases and barracks.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called an urgent meeting of his security cabinet due to the recent escalation. Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant are managing the situation from the IDF’s military base in Tel Aviv.
Hezbollah stated that their attack on Israel was in retaliation for what they called “brutal Zionist aggression,” which they claim led to the death of their senior military commander, Fuad Shukr. Shukr was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon, in July.
Since last October, Israel has been in conflict with Hezbollah, which is based in Lebanon, while also fighting Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Both Hezbollah and Hamas are supported by Iran.
