PM Shehbaz says household consumers consuming up to 200 units of electricity will get a subsidy for three months

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a Rs50 billion relief package for electricity consumers, aimed at easing the burden of inflation on the general public. Under this initiative, households consuming up to 200 units of electricity will receive a subsidy for the next three months — July, August, and September.

Addressing an event in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that this subsidy is a response to public concerns following protests over the government’s earlier decision to significantly raise tariffs, a move seen as necessary to secure an International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan.

Highlighting that these households constitute 94% of all electricity consumers, Sharif reassured the nation that the subsidy would not strain the national exchequer, as it will be covered through the development fund allocated in the budget. He also pointed out that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had previously reduced power prices without such budgetary provisions.
