PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Consults with Gary Kirsten on Pakistan Team’s Future
LAHORE: Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten and Assistant Coach Azhar Mahmood arrived in Lahore on Monday for discussions with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi regarding the restructuring of Pakistan’s cricket team.
Following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup, Naqvi specifically summoned Kirsten to review the team’s future prospects. Mahmood was also called in from England for the discussions.
Of particular importance during the meetings was Naqvi’s deliberation with Kirsten on the retention of Babar Azam’s captaincy.
Kirsten had previously submitted a comprehensive report critiquing Pakistan’s underwhelming World Cup campaign, addressing key issues such as player fitness, discipline, and game strategy that contributed to the team’s premature exit from the tournament.
The PCB chairman intends to assess Kirsten’s confidential report thoroughly, which is expected to guide decisions on potential squad changes and the team’s strategic direction moving forward.
The board’s approach includes seeking input from other officials and former cricketers before finalizing any decisions related to team composition and leadership.
Kirsten, in his assessment following Pakistan’s early exit from the World Cup, highlighted concerns over the team’s fitness levels and their skill development, emphasizing the need for unity and improved performance standards among players.
Additionally, Naqvi has initiated consultations with former national team captains and international players to explore further adjustments in Pakistan’s cricket setup.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Test coach Jason Gillespie, presently in Karachi, is scheduled to meet with Naqvi in the near future to discuss these ongoing developments.
