On July 5, over 9,000 employees of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) initiated the first-ever strike in the province’s history. The strike has led to the closure of LCBO stores for a two-week period, as announced in a press release by the Crown corporation on July 5.
In the event that the strike extends beyond 14 days, the province plans to open 32 LCBO retail stores for in-store shopping on Fridays through Sundays, with limited operating hours.
Negotiations between the LCBO, a provincially owned entity, and the Ontario Public Sector Employees Union (OPSEU) reached an impasse on July 4. The primary concern revolves around the government’s recent decision to permit the sale of coolers and other ready-to-drink beverages in convenience stores, grocery stores, and large retail outlets.
