The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has taken action against fifteen beverage manufacturers for allegedly disseminating false and misleading information through their product packaging.

Upon initial review, it was found that these manufacturers prominently feature images of various fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants on their packaging, creating an impression that their products are derived solely from these ingredients or contain their pulps, pastes, or natural flavors.

The CCP expressed concern over discrepancies between the packaging of products sold domestically in Pakistan and those exported to international markets. It noted differences in depicted ingredients and ingredient descriptions on the same label. Interestingly, two prominent manufacturers omitted fruit graphics on products intended for international markets, suggesting a deliberate effort to mislead Pakistani consumers.

Such misleading practices deceive consumers about the actual nature and nutritional value of the products, particularly when these claims are unsubstantiated. The inclusion of inaccurate ingredient images on product packaging constitutes deceptive marketing under Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010.

In response, the Competition Commission of Pakistan has mandated that manufacturers ensure uniformity in packaging for both local and international markets, with minor adjustments to meet specific labeling requirements abroad, aiming for consistency and fairness. Accurate representation of product content through packaging imagery and descriptions is crucial.

Consumers are advised to exercise caution and diligence when making purchasing decisions, avoiding reliance solely on attractive visuals like fruit pictures. They are encouraged to report any instances of misleading information on packaging to the Commission.

The CCP remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering fair competition and safeguarding consumers against anti-competitive behaviors.
