Will Iran’s foreign policy undergo changes with a new president?
The two remaining candidates in Iran’s presidential race, Saeed Jalili and Masoud Pezeshkian, present distinct visions for the country’s future. Pezeshkian, a former health minister and surgeon, emerged first in the recent election but fell short of a majority, necessitating a runoff with Jalili on July 5.
Pezeshkian, supported by reformists including former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, aims to pursue a reformist foreign policy agenda. This includes renegotiating the nuclear deal to ease sanctions on Iran and mend relations with Western nations.
In contrast, Jalili, known for his conservative stance and past as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, favors a more confrontational approach towards the West, particularly the United States. His candidacy signifies a potential continuation of Iran’s assertive foreign policy stance.
The upcoming runoff is pivotal as it will determine Iran’s future direction in international relations amid ongoing challenges and tensions.
