The 2024 iPad Pro models use a new tandem OLED technology, which could also be featured in a future Vision Pro headset. LG and Samsung have developed smaller versions of these tandem displays, which are designed for use in headsets like the Vision Pro.

According to a report from the Korean site Sisa Journal, as shared by MacRumors, it’s not clear if LG and Samsung plan to mass-produce these displays soon. These displays might be too advanced for the upcoming Meta Quest, and since Apple isn’t expected to release a Vision Pro 2 until at least 2026, there is ample time for these companies to start production if they choose to.

Tandem OLED displays are very bright and energy-efficient. They use two OLED panels stacked on top of each other to capture and combine light from both, enhancing brightness, color saturation, contrast, and viewing angles. This technology also helps reduce burn-in, a common issue with OLED screens. Since heat causes burn-in, the two-panel setup runs cooler and extends the display’s lifespan compared to a single OLED panel.

The new iPad Pro benefits from these improvements, and the Vision Pro 2 could potentially include this technology as well, offering a significant upgrade over the current 4K micro-OLED displays from Sony.
