Solana to Support Worldcoin's World IDs via Wormhole Integration
Solana to Support Worldcoin’s World IDs via Wormhole IntegrationWormhole will leverage the Solana blockchain to verify Worldcoin’s World IDs, initially verified on Ethereum. This expansion comes after Wormhole Labs received around $70,000 in funding from the Worldcoin Foundation.
Worldcoin, co-founded by Sam Altman, gained significant attention last summer, with new enrollments occurring every eight seconds on average. To maintain momentum and boost visibility, the Worldcoin Foundation launched a grants program, allocating over $830,000 in WLD tokens for various projects.
One notable initiative is the cross-chain protocol Wormhole, which aims to integrate Worldcoin’s World ID with the Solana blockchain.
Wormhole facilitates data and asset transfers across more than 30 blockchains, including Solana, Ethereum, and Binance Smart Chain. This integration will enable Solana-based protocols to verify World IDs originally verified on Ethereum.
World ID is central to the Worldcoin project. It involves scanning users’ eyes with Worldcoin’s Orbs to generate an IrisCode, which then creates a World ID. This process verifies “personhood” to prevent the use of bots, addressing concerns amid rapid AI advancements. Verified users can access the World App, which provides a private ID system and functions as a crypto wallet for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC.
The Worldcoin project has attracted over 2 million users but also faced regulatory scrutiny. France and Germany coordinated investigations into the project’s legality, while Kenya imposed a complete ban.
Wormhole’s integration with Solana will use a new Solana smart contract and Wormhole Queries, a cross-chain data retrieval service, to verify World IDs. This announcement coincides with the first public attempt to launch a spot Solana ETF in the U.S. by VanEck, which resulted in a 6.6% price spike for the token within an hour.
