On the final day of the individual judo competition, Riner made history by becoming the most decorated Olympic judoka of all time. His victory in the +100kg weight class marked his third individual Olympic gold medal, following his triumphs in Rio 2016 and London 2012, and his sixth Olympic medal overall.

The gold medal was particularly special as Riner won it on home soil. In the final match, he faced Kim Minjong of the Republic of Korea and secured a decisive victory by ippon.

Tajikistan’s Temur Rakhimov claimed the first-ever judo bronze medal for his country, while Uzbekistan’s Alisher Yusupov earned the second bronze of the evening.

With 11 world titles and now six Olympic medals to his name, Riner has set new records, becoming the first male judoka to win five individual Olympic medals. His journey to the top of the podium has been legendary, having defeated some of the sport’s greatest competitors along the way.

Riner’s triumph was more than a personal achievement; it was a moment of national pride, inspiring future generations and leaving a lasting impact on the sport.

“It’s a great source of pride, even if it’s complicated to grasp right away,” Riner reflected. “It’s special because it’s at home. And having Guadeloupe and the Antilles behind me—it’s incredible! I’ve dreamed of experiencing a final like this, with an ippon like this. Today, I’ve done it at home.”

Looking ahead to the LA 2028 Olympics, Riner remarked, “Of course. But everything comes in time. It’s 2024 now. I’m going to enjoy this medal.”

As French President Emmanuel Macron looked on, Riner’s victory in Paris celebrated excellence, resilience, and the true spirit of the Olympics, igniting a flame of inspiration that will continue to burn brightly for years to come.

Tomorrow, August 3, Riner will have the opportunity to further cement his legacy. Leading the French team, he aims to repeat the mixed team success of Tokyo 2020 and add another medal to his storied career.
