Pakistan’s newly appointed red-ball coach, Jason Gillespie, emphasized the significance of fitness, consistency, and fielding during his inaugural press conference in Karachi on Sunday. Gillespie, renowned as one of Australia’s greatest bowlers, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Pakistan cricket team and confirmed plans to accompany them on their forthcoming tour to Australia.

Acknowledging the talent within the Pakistan team, Gillespie stressed the need for enhanced consistency in their performances. “Our focus will be on achieving continuity and consistency in our game,” he affirmed, underscoring that player fitness would be non-negotiable. Gillespie insisted that fitness is a matter of personal pride and professionalism in international cricket.

In discussions about Pakistan’s playing style, Gillespie mentioned ongoing conversations with captain Shan Masood and future dialogues with players during upcoming fitness camps. He indicated that team selection would consider both the opposition and prevailing conditions, emphasizing that players beneficial to the team’s performance would be prioritized.

Addressing Pakistan’s fielding challenges, Gillespie identified improving this aspect as a key objective. “Enhancing Pakistan’s fielding standards is a top priority,” he declared, noting the team’s aim to compete effectively against top-tier opponents.

Gillespie confirmed his upcoming travel plans with the team to Australia, reflecting on Pakistan’s previous tour where, despite a 3-0 series defeat, there were phases of dominant play.
