Dr. Anthony Fauci Recovering After West Nile Virus Hospitalization
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was recently hospitalized due to West Nile virus. He is now recovering at home.
West Nile virus is a rare but serious illness spread mainly by mosquitoes. It can cause symptoms like fever, headaches, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Jenn Kuzmuk, a spokesperson for Fauci, confirmed the illness to USA TODAY on Saturday and mentioned that Fauci is expected to fully recover.
Fauci, who is 83 years old, spent six days in the hospital before being released.
Dr. Anthony Fauci became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic as a leading public health expert. His work and advice on vaccination, science, and social distancing were crucial in guiding the public through the health crisis.
However, his strong positions on these topics also led to criticism and frustration from some people. While many admired him for his expertise and dedication, others disagreed with his recommendations and policies. This has made him a figure who is both highly respected and controversial.
Most people who get West Nile virus do not show any symptoms, according to the CDC. About 20% of those infected may experience symptoms like a fever. However, only about 1 in 150 people who get the virus will develop a serious illness, which can sometimes be life-threatening.
West Nile virus has been present in the U.S. for 25 years. It was first discovered in the country in August 1999, starting in New York City.
In the U.S., West Nile virus cases are most common during the summer and fall when mosquitoes are most active. The number of cases can vary each year. As of August 20 this year, there have been 216 reported cases across 33 states. Of these cases, 142 were classified as neuroinvasive, meaning the virus affected the nervous system and could lead to conditions like meningitis or encephalitis.
