Babar Azam Sets New World Record in Historic T20I against Ireland
Skipper Babar Azam has made history in T20I cricket, despite Pakistan’s unexpected loss to Ireland in the first T20I match in Dublin last Friday.
While Pakistan’s top players were facing defeat against Ireland, Babar Azam was rewriting records as he led the ‘Shaheens’ for the 77th time as T20I captain.
Country | Captain | T20Is |
Pakistan | Babar Azam | 77 |
Australia | Aaron Finch | 76 |
India | MS Dhoni | 72 |
England | Eoin Morgan | 72 |
New Zealand | Kane Williamson | 71 |
Babar Azam now holds the world record for the most appearances as captain in T20I cricket for any country, surpassing former Australian skipper Aaron Finch, who led Australia in 76 T20Is.
But that’s not all! Babar Azam achieved another milestone, being just one victory away from becoming the most successful T20I captain, surpassing the record held by Brian Masaba from Uganda, who has 44 wins as captain. Babar is currently tied with the Ugandan legend with 44 wins as skipper. However, considering the team’s current form, securing a victory seems challenging, even against a team like Ireland.
Country | Captain | Wins | Matches |
Uganda | Brian Masaba | 44 | 56 |
Pakistan | Babar Azam | 44 | 77 |
Afghanistan | Asghar Afghan | 42 | 52 |
England | Eoin Morgan | 42 | 72 |
Pakistan faced Ireland for the first time in 15 years, and luck seemed to favor the Irish as batter Andy Balbirnie’s stellar performance with the bat led the hosts to victory over the visitors. It marked Ireland’s first-ever win against Pakistan in this format, with the previous encounter between the two teams occurring during the World T20I in 2009.
