Netflix Removes Its Basic Tier the Most Affordable Ad Free Option Netflix to Discontinue Basic Plan in the US and France, Shifts Focus to Higher Tiered and Ad Supported Options
In its Q2 financial report, Netflix announced the discontinuation of its Basic plan in the United States and France. Originally tested in the UK and Canada, this change is now being rolled out officially. New users are no longer able to sign up for the $11.99 Basic plan, and existing subscribers are being encouraged to switch to either the Standard plan at $15.49 (with no ads) or a new ad-supported tier priced at $6.99.
Additionally, Netflix is experimenting with ads that appear on the Pause screen, specifically for ad-supported tiers. This move is part of the company’s strategy to explore alternative revenue streams and measure success based on regional revenue growth rather than new subscriber numbers.
Furthermore, Netflix continues to offer its Premium plan at $22.99, which includes features like support for more devices, 4K streaming, and offline downloads where available. These changes reflect Netflix’s ongoing adjustments to its pricing and service offerings to better align with consumer preferences and market trends.
