K-Electric (KE) received approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) for its Power Acquisition Programme (PAP) spanning from 2024 to 2028. This milestone approval marks a significant stride in KE’s efforts to bolster Karachi’s electricity supply reliability.

On March 20, 2023, KE submitted a comprehensive plan outlining the PAP to Nepra, emphasizing the assurance of an uninterrupted power supply. The plan advocates for a diversified energy mix, incorporating renewable energy, local fuel sources, and electricity from the National Grid, aligning with national energy objectives from 2022 to 2031.

Central to the initiative is the expansion of renewable energy capacity, with KE aiming to add 1,282 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy by 2030. This expansion entails the development of solar and wind projects, including a 270 MW solar project in Karachi and a 200 MW plant near the Dhabeji Grid Station.

These projects signify a monumental step towards fostering sustainable energy practices in Karachi, with the dual benefits of enhanced energy security and reduced environmental impact
